Key takeaways

Mumbai and Jim Corbett are about as far apart as two Indian destinations can be while still being in the same country. The straight-line distance is over 1,400 km. By road, it's closer to 1,600 km, a 28 to 30 hour drive that almost nobody attempts in one go. By train, it's a lengthy multi-connection journey.

The practical way to do this trip is a flight-plus-road combination, and once you understand how the pieces fit together, it's actually a smooth journey. Here's the complete breakdown.

The Basic Plan: Fly to Delhi or Dehradun, Drive to Corbett

Mumbai has excellent air connectivity, and Delhi is the natural hub for reaching Jim Corbett. The route most travellers use:

  • Mumbai to Delhi (or Dehradun) by flight
  • Delhi to Ramnagar (the nearest town to Jim Corbett) by road or train

That second leg, Delhi to Ramnagar, is roughly 250 to 280 km by road and takes about 5.5 to 7 hours depending on traffic and route. It's a manageable drive, and it's where the landscape starts shifting from plains to foothills.

Flight Options from Mumbai

Mumbai to Delhi

This is the most straightforward option. Flights run all day, every day, from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (Mumbai) to Indira Gandhi International Airport (Delhi). Flight time is about 2 hours.

Budget airlines, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India Express, frequently have fares starting around Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,500 if booked 2 to 3 weeks in advance. Last-minute fares can be significantly higher during holiday periods.

From Delhi airport, you have two main onward options: drive yourself (if you've arranged a rental or someone's picking you up), or take a cab to Delhi's railway stations (New Delhi or Hazrat Nizamuddin) for a train to Ramnagar.

Mumbai to Dehradun (Alternative)

Dehradun has an airport, Jolly Grant, with flights from Mumbai via Delhi (no direct flights). If you're planning to visit Mussoorie or the Garhwal region before heading to Corbett, this routing makes sense. But for a direct Corbett trip, flying to Delhi is simpler.

Mumbai to Pantnagar (Closest Airport to Corbett)

Pantnagar Airport in Uttarakhand is about 80 km from Ramnagar. It's the closest airport to Jim Corbett, and there are flights from Delhi to Pantnagar (mostly on SpiceJet, roughly 1 hour). However, there are no direct flights from Mumbai to Pantnagar, you'd need to connect through Delhi.

The Mumbai-Delhi-Pantnagar routing works like this: fly Mumbai to Delhi (2 hours), connect to Pantnagar (1 hour), cab from Pantnagar to Ramnagar (1.5 hours). Total door-to-door: 7 to 9 hours if connections are smooth.

This is genuinely the fastest way to get from Mumbai to Corbett. The catch: flights to Pantnagar are limited to a few per week, they book up fast during peak season (November to March), and any connection problem in Delhi leaves you stranded. Check current schedules on IRCTC or directly with SpiceJet.

Delhi to Ramnagar: Road Options

This is the stretch that most travellers underestimate. The options:

By Cab (Recommended)

Pre-booking a cab from Delhi Airport or Delhi city to Ramnagar is the most practical option for most travellers. Distance is about 270 to 290 km, drive time 5.5 to 7 hours.

  • Via NH 9 through Hapur and Moradabad: The standard route. Mostly highway until Moradabad, then state roads through the foothills.
  • Via NH 58 through Haridwar and Kotdwar: Adds about 50 km but avoids Moradabad city traffic and gives better scenery. Some travellers prefer this.

One-way cab fares from Delhi to Ramnagar typically range from Rs 3,500 to Rs 5,500 for a sedan, more for an SUV. Book through Ola Outstation, Zoom Car, or directly with a driver. Many Corbett resorts also offer airport pickup packages, worth asking when you book.

By Train from Delhi

The Corbett Park Link Express runs from Delhi to Ramnagar on specific days of the week. Check the IRCTC website for current schedules and availability, trains run seasonally and timings change.

Other trains to Ramnagar operate from Delhi Anand Vihar or Delhi Junction. The journey takes about 6 to 7 hours. Sleeper class is perfectly adequate; AC 3-tier is more comfortable for the overnight option.

For Mumbai travellers catching an evening flight to Delhi and wanting to get to Corbett the same night, a late-evening train from Delhi to Ramnagar (arriving early morning) can work nicely, you arrive at the park just in time for a morning safari.

Combining the Journey: Sample Itineraries

Option A: Quick 3-Night Trip

  • Day 1: Morning flight Mumbai to Delhi. Cab to Ramnagar (arrive by evening). Check in.
  • Day 2: Morning safari (Bijrani or Jhirna zone). Afternoon safari. Overnight at resort.
  • Day 3: Morning safari. Drive to Delhi. Evening flight back to Mumbai.
  • Day 4: Home.

This is tight but doable. You get two or three safaris in, which is enough for a real taste of the park.

Option B: Comfortable 4 to 5 Night Trip

  • Day 1: Flight to Delhi. Overnight train to Ramnagar.
  • Day 2: Morning arrival. Check in. Afternoon safari.
  • Day 3 to 4: Full days at Corbett. Morning and evening safaris. Optional Dhikala overnight if booked.
  • Day 5: Return to Delhi by cab. Evening flight to Mumbai.

This gives you 4 to 5 safaris, which is when the park starts revealing itself properly. Wildlife spotting is partly luck, and more attempts means better odds.

Safari Zone Recommendations for Mumbai Travellers

Since you're travelling a significant distance, it's worth booking for zones that maximise the experience:

  • Dhikala Zone: The best in the park. Open grasslands, river views, and the highest tiger density. Book the Forest Rest House (FRH) through the Uttarakhand Forest Department portal months in advance during peak season. Canter safaris (shared vehicle) are also available and easier to book.
  • Bijrani Zone: Excellent jeep safari zone, great for leopards and elephants alongside tiger sightings. More accessible for day or short-stay visitors.
  • Jhirna Zone: Open year-round, less crowded. A good choice if you're visiting in shoulder season.

Best Time to Travel from Mumbai

  • November to February: Peak season. Perfect weather in both Mumbai and the hills. Book flights and safaris well in advance, resorts near Corbett fill up fast.
  • March to May: Summer, but excellent for wildlife. Vegetation thins and animals concentrate near water. Mumbai heat makes this a good escape time.
  • June to October: Monsoon. Most park zones are closed from July 15 onwards. Not recommended.

Staying Near the Park

For a trip from Mumbai, staying inside the forest buffer zone is worth the extra cost. The difference between a Ramnagar town hotel and a riverside resort 15 km from the park gate is significant, in sound, atmosphere, and proximity to wildlife.

  • Budget to mid-range: Corbett Riverside Resort, Nature Heritage Resort, Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000 per night.
  • Upper mid-range: Corbett Machan Resort, Infinity Corbett Resort, Rs 5,000 to Rs 9,000.
  • Luxury: Jim's Jungle Retreat, Aahana Resort, Rs 10,000 and above, safaris often included.

Practical Tips

  • Book flights early. Mumbai-Delhi is a competitive route and fares jump during long weekends.
  • If flying to Pantnagar, have a backup plan for cab to Ramnagar, the road is fine but long if your flight lands late.
  • Carry layers. Mumbai's humidity doesn't prepare you for Corbett mornings in winter, which can be genuinely cold at 5 AM.
  • Confirm safari bookings before confirming flights. Nothing worse than landing in Delhi to discover Dhikala is fully booked for your dates.

Mumbai to Jim Corbett isn't a spontaneous weekend trip, it needs planning. But for a city that never really stops, the combination of a short flight and a few days in dense sal forest is a reset that's hard to replicate anywhere closer to home. The tigers are optional. The quiet isn't.
